Alma Lopez became a nationally known visual artist when her art piece titled “Our Lady,” became the center of controversy in a dispute where freedom of expression and repressive traditionalism enlarged the already grandeur of her work. In this interview, Lopez recounts the details leading and following the initial controversy in 2001, and her most recent publication on the case, Our Lady of Controversy, a book of essays in which women scholars and artists describe the importance of this seminal artwork.
